October Meetup

Now that the “silly season” is over and the cowelled(sic) winter is setting in it’s time to start our regular meet ups.

We have a lot planned for this year including deploying services on our new server, talks and events and plenty of pints!

So to kick off a new start we’re going for a new venue this time which is Richard Grace’s Bar[view map]  on Wednesday 12th October at 8pm.

Hope to see you all there!

AthUG Server

We’ve commissioned the server for AthUG and will be deploying services over the coming weeks. We’re looking for people interested in being trained as a Linux SysAdmin to get in touch before the 8th of August as we want to keep any trainee sysadmins involved from the beginning. So if you are interested or know someone who is, please get in touch.

A name for the server has also been selected, details below:-

Hybris (Ύβρις), spirit of outrageous behaviour (From Greek Mythology)

Once again special thanks for Avova who kindly provide our hosting services.

Name The Server

As part of our AthUG Server Project we are going to need a “cool” name for it.

Please post suggestions in the comment box for this post.

AthUG Server Project

With the rising level of interest in Linux and in particular the server end of things we’ve started looking at getting AthUG set up with an internet facing server to provide members with a nice, safe, central place to work on projects(particularly web based stuff) and also learn and experiment with Linux.

Voluntary SysAdmins will maintain the server, train in new SysAdmins and encourage new blood to study the dark arts of Linux System Administration.

Initial Services are likely to be:-

  • Remote Shell (via SSH)
  • Web Server with Standard LAMP Stack
  • Mail (Your own @athug.com email account/alias)
  • Subversion Hosting – via HTTPS and locally.

I’m sure there will be more on this after next weeks AthuUG Meeting. If anyone has any comments/suggestions please leave them below.

New Year, New Start

For any of those following the site, cheers. It’s been a very busy year for most of us, so it was hard for most members to dedicate time to the User Group, but with that, a new year is upon is, so we’ll be making a new start.

If anyone has any ideas for events or meet ups, please feel free to contribute.

OSSBarcamp September

Hey all,

This September is the 4th OSSBarcamp and we’re planning to make a weekend out of it. On the 25th and 26th (September) at The University of College Dublin, 10am-5pm each day, the event runs. Entry is free, but you must register, if it’s anything like the last event, the tickets will go fast, so register early. Our plan is to head up early on the Saturday, stay in a hostel for the Saturday night and back home on the Sunday night. (More than likely by train).

So, what’s it about?

OSSBarcamp is essentially a conference centered around the open source community. However those giving talks are generally different each event. Have a look at the timetable to see if something interests you. (Note that the timetable isn’t complete yet and more may be added).

Why go?

It’s a great way to meet and interact with people of similar interests,  in all likelihood you’ll learn something new, I have the two times I’ve been to the event. You meet new people and get to have a bit of craic. You may even be interested in giving a talk this time or next.

Those from in going, let us know through here or you can email me @ roborourke (at) gmail (dot) com

For more info and registration visit the OSSBarcamp site :)
